Baseline situation

The Center for School Quality and Teacher Education Baden-Württemberg (ZSL) experienced problems with various student upload formats and the assessment of digital assignment submissions. The Covid 19 pandemic reinforced the need for asynchronous control and assessment of digital submissions. A solution was needed to standardize delivery formats or convert them to formats that could be used online. The use of different devices and media encodings for file transfer magnified the problem.

Our solution

Um die Herausforderungen bei der Konvertierung von Dateien in Moodle zu bewältigen, haben wir zwei Plugins entwickelt. Das Unowebconv File-Converter-Plugin konvertiert Aufgabenabgaben in PDF-Format. Das Ffmpegavcc Filter-Plugin scannt Mediendateien und konvertiert sie bei Bedarf in offene Formate.

We decided to develop a dynamically extensible conversion service that can convert numerous media formats into other formats. This service uses a control/worker architecture to manage processes and optimize resource allocation between different tasks and services - making it possible to launch any number of worker processes to dynamically handle high conversion requests. By implementing a common interface for both plugins, we were able to ensure that they work together seamlessly and can be used consistently.

Situation after cooperation

Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem ZSL konnten wir regelmäßig mehrere Tausend Dateien pro Tag für etwa 1500 Schulen in ganz Baden-Württemberg konvertieren. Der Dienst bleibt auch nach der Corona-Pandemie von großer Bedeutung für die Digitalisierung der Lehre. Wir sind stolz darauf, dass wir gemeinsam mit dem ZSL eine Lösung entwickeln konnten, die viele Schulen in dieser Notlage unterstützen konnte.

Conclusion

The project was successful and an extension of the web service is planned. We look back on a great project, because not only the solution development was a lot of fun, but the communication always worked well and quickly.
